Port #1: Halifax

Halifax was great!  Although we were in port for two days and I was only able to visit the city for one.  Still, it was more than enough time.  That’s not to say I would love to visit Halifax and greater New Foundland again…The adventure in port began with s trip to the local supermarket to pick up some triscuits and other goods.  From there, I headed into town to stroll through the Public Garden and to see the Citadel. The garden was tremendous – it gives Boston’s a run for its money.  No swan boats though.  The citadel was a bit disappointing.  The view was nice, but without a formal tour, it was far from anything special…

The second best part was taking heed of the advice provided by Joe V.  The Bicycle Thief restaurant was tremendous.  Lemon coated fish with salad and crispy fries.  A perfect ending to a day out on the town.

The best part, though, was visiting a tea shop – The World Tea House.  The selection of teas was amazing.  I did in fact purchase some – a citrus green tea and a masala chai.  The citrus green was always on the list. The masala only slipped onto the list after I had a most amazing drink – spiced cranberry cider.  Amazing.  You steep masala chai until it is robust.  Then, add it to cranberry juice.  Done.  Delicious.  Thank you, more please.

The other day in port was spent entirely on the ship welcoming students to our voyage.  It was crazy and chaotic – but the energy was amazing.  We’re now all here bumping and rolling on the high seas of the North Atlantic.

Welcome!

Hi.  Welcome to my voyage blog.  This site serves as a holding place for written reflections, pictures, and other means to share about my around-the-Atlantic journey.  To begin, I guess it makes sense to share the ports of call:

Boston, MA, USA
Halifax, Canada
Galway and Dublin, Ireland
Southampton (and London), England
Antwerp, Belgium
Lisbon, Portugal
Cadiz, Spain
Casablanca, Morocco
Tema/Accra (and Cape Three Points), Ghana
Cape Town, South Africa
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Montevideo, Uruguay
Rio de Janeiro and Manaus, Brazil,
The Island of Dominica, Caribbean
Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA

I will be travelling as a staff member with the Semester at Sea program (http://www.semesteratsea.org/) where I will serve as a resource for students, chaperone excursions while in port, coordinate the spirituality and religious-life programs, and co-teach the Leadership course.  Simply, this experience packages just about all of my interests into an amazing four-month extravaganza of awesomeness.

Thanks for taking a look -
